Lucca has Roman origin (Amphitheatre square) and together with Pisa, Volterra and part of Sardinia, is one of the capitals of Tuscan Romanesque style which is superbly represented in the Duomo, in San Frediano and San Michele in Foro churches.
Rococo and baroque style of the XVII/XVIII century is very well represented in down-town palaces and villas of the surrounding hills.
Luisa Baciocchi, Napoleon's sister, appointed Duchess of Lucca, lived here for a long time.
The city centre is car-free and is embraced by the awesome walls dated XVI/XVII century.
The top of the walls has been turned into a scenic promenade (open to bicycles, too) which overlooks the whole town and allows easy access to any monument.
Lucca also has a renowned opera theatre, Teatro del Giglio, that holds concerts of international standard also in winter season.
Every September/October there's the celebration of “Autunno Lucchese” featuring parades, games, music, exhibition etc.
